When planning a trip, there are so many things we have to thing about before we depart. Here are 12 Things to bear in mind:
- Camera with charged batteries and empty card
- Gotta do it, record your adventures, but be prepared, take extra cards and remember to charge those batteries beforehand
- Charged Mobile Smart Phone
- Simple, but we forget to do all the time
- Backup Routings
- Backup Tickets
- Applicable Airline Phone Numbers
- Applicable Airline Websites Bookmarked in Mobile Phone
- With some airlines you have to list online, so its so much easier to bookmark the web sites. Also for flight status, it makes it easier. You can also download their mobile applications.
- Check Loads
- All too often we forget this one and get stranded someplace. This helps you to look for alternate airports as well
- Check-in Online
- Ensures you get on that standby list 24 hours in advance as it improves your priority of others with your same pass class
- Change for Local Bus
- This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get around so ensure you do some research and are prepared
- Passport (if applicable
- Ensure your passport is at least valid for 6 months after the date of your arrival and have a few blank pages for the passport/visa stamp.
- Visa (if applicable)
- If you are a U.S. citizens there are still a few country where a visa is required such as Argentina (on arrival), Australia (online), Brazil (prior to departure), Chile, (on arrival) People’s Republic of China (prior to departure) and Russia (prior to departure) to name a few.
- Pen and Paper
- You’ll need this to jot down flight information as well as other local information, plus filling out immigration forms if traveling internationally.

Obvious: Lots of cash in small denominations. Not so: Small gifts for really helpful gate agents, phone card for foreign countries (or intl sim card), and two small wash cloths when you have to take a bath in a sink.
Oh I forgot to include: email your friends, or post on FB, your possible routing just in case you get stuck for days. Look at the local news the week prior for: VOLCANIC ACTIVITY And ESPECIALLY TRAVELING IN EUROPE: check for any possible or impending STRIKES!
Checking loads any more is a joke.
Unless the flight is almost empty which is no longer the case what the average res agent will see is seats available but in most cases on popular routes in peak times the flights are almost always in an “oversold” status and add to the fact that servicing a call from a non-rev doesn’t add to their revenue stats and the call is usually VERY short!
Don’t forget to take plenty of snacks, finger foods and reading material. The airport food can be very expensive and begin to add up when you get bumped for hours.
* Ear plugs- I keep ear plugs in my wallet & use it anytime/ anywhere.
* Blanket
* Eye cover
These are good Marjorie.
Thank you.
I agree here; its always good to be nice to your fellow employee. And having small denominations does help. Singles are the best
. Don’t forget to tip the folks who help you along the way.
On some routes checking load status should be listed twice.
other than pretending to buy a ticket to see how many seats are open or using http://www.fly-zed.com or in some cases friends who work at other airlines to check loads, what other webpages are there to see smiley faces or other forms of flight load information?
Thanks for your note CJ.
British Airways and Air France both have online websites for checking flights and listings for OA employees. Go here, choose British Airways for the BA one – http://passrider.com/reservations/. The Air France one is located at http://gp.airfrance.fr.
