Hotel discounts

  1. I always stay at Wyndhams. They have great beds and their rates are usually between $50-$60 for Continental employees. One of my favorites is just a block off Jackson Square in New Orleans. It’s an older hotel and our room was on two floors with a staircase up to the bedroom area. It was great.

I’ve also stayed several times at the Wyndham by the Newark airport. It’s just a little more than the cheaper hotels like Holiday Inn and is way nicer.

Recently had a chance to stay at a new hotel at AMS Schiphol – CitizenM. It was wonderful! They don’t do discounts, but the rooms run 69 or 79 Euro, depending on if you want it flexible or not. It’s right at the Airport – just walk outside about 5 mins and you’re there – covered walking too.

It’s a new concept hotel – you check yourself in, the rooms are very modern – large King Size bed with really nice linens, flat screen TV, the shower is like a pod and so is the toilet. The rooms aren’t huge, they’re only as wide as the bed, which is at the far end of the room with a wall size window. You can chose to look over the runway or over the airport.

Everything in the room is controlled by a master remote pad thing – lights, the blinds, tv. You can even select what color lighting, blue, pink, red, green – very cool.

And can you say “soundproof”? Sitting right by the Airport, it’s absolutely silent in the room – I never heard a sound, nothing from the other rooms either.

Free WiFi!!!!! No 10 Euro charge, nothing – free, plus they have 4 iMacs set up in the very euro modern lobby.

It’s a really great deal, and a bargin at the Airport – and nice not to have to wait for a shuttle or nothing, just walk right over to the Airport.

    I’ll will certainly stay again!

Fantastic Kristin, thank you for your comment. That sounds like a nice property in New Orleans. To those reading, remember that these rates are only available with the proper credentials.

Kudos on getting a good rate in Newark; I take it you’ve gotten bumped there a few times? . BTW, I love Holiday Inns, who says they are “the cheaper hotels?”Would anyone classify Holiday Inns as a “cheap hotel?” If so, why?

I’m staying in one this weekend in my secret destination.

    Brilliant Jeff,

That is a nice find and thank you for sharing it. This hotel is perfect as the others in the area apart from the Sheraton right next to the CitizenM and the Mercure inside security requires that you take a paid shuttle to get to them.

Has anyone else stayed at the CitizenM or any of the area hotels and want to share their experiences?

You can just pop right into the airport and take the train into the city for about 5.20 EUR return on a weekend so you can’t beat this deal or can you?

Although Jeff, I don’t mind hearing the planes go by .

    Tokyo on MY budget:

For those who think I’m rolling in cash to be able to afford a long weekend in Japan, here’s an approximation of what I spent in US Dollars on my July 4th 2009 weekend trip from IAH to NRT/TYO:

    Round-trip IAH-NRT-IAH on Continental in BusinessFirst: $ 0.00
2 nights @ Hilton Narita including breakfast and internet: $155.00
Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, and Sunday lunch: $ 50.00
    Train ticket round-trip NRT-TYO on Saturday: $ 25.00
    Misc. snacks etc. $ 25.00
Departure taxes from Japan, paid directly since my ticket is free: $ 23.00

Approximate total cost for a long weekend in Japan: $278

Note – my Hilton rate was their current Summer Promo 2-for-1 including breakfast, NOT a discounted airline industry rate.

    Re “cheaper” worldwide hotel chains

Why yes, I AM speaking of Holiday Inn and Best Western! Not to mention the lesser-priced (but usually much more amenitied) sister hotels in the major chains such as Hilton, Starwood, and Marriott…

A wonderful little tip here, if you ever plan to travel to an expensive foreign destination…

Stay for cheap here in the US, and redeem your free points and nights over THERE where your redemption means a whole lot more!

Best Western is one of the best hotel chains to accomplish this. Here in the U.S. their hotels are certainly comfortable, but usually nothing close to exotic, exciting, or expensive. But overseas, Best Westerns are some of the better Western-style hotels around.

Agreed Cate. using your points at international hotels is a much better value. I once used points at a Holiday Inn chain in Beijing during the Olympics. Really nice hotel which was within walking distance of the Aquatic Center and the Bird nest. The rate even included breakfast. By the way, if you are in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, try the Howard Johnson there. Trust me, you WILL like it.

  9. Chrystina says:

Country Inns and Suites Columbus Airport. I work there. Most Country Inns are really nice. We offer rates for all airlines and distressed passengers. We also offer shuttle and cabs on us if you land or get stranded after our shuttle stops. Being the girlfriend of a pilot I know that sometimes you just get stuck places and we offer a clean comfy place to stay!!!

The Excalibur Hotel on the Vegas Strip booked through priceline was 28 dollars a night.

Anybody know a good cheap(er) hotel near JFK?

    Odonis,

Thanks for that information; what days of the week was this?

  13. Action says:

i4vegas.com seems to have the most up-to-date prices for Vegas hotels. Weekday prices can be unbelievably low, like $20 a night on strip hotels. Usually matches the rate I get when calling the hotel directly, with a couple of exceptions:

Hyatt Place: Often gives a $49 rate for airline employees.
Clarion Inn & Suites: Seems to always give us $49 rate if they have rooms. A good backup when others are full.

I recommend avoiding hotels.com, expedia, travelocity, etc. They charge you a fee, as much as $25/night, to book. Not to mention the pay in advance requirement, which I dislike. You can usually get the same rate, without the fee, if you call directly to the hotel. There are exceptions. For example, if you see an “Expedia Special Rate” then it might be a good deal with no fee.

  17. Blount,

That is a good deal for a weekend as Tokyo is a very expensive city. Thank you for sharing it. Yes, oftentimes the hotels have special rates that are lower than industry discount. it is always a good idea to ask about that when booking as well.

BTW, how was the train train ride from Narita airport to the city and how come you got it that cheap? The last time I did the ride, I had to make one change, is it nonstop now? On the return it was nonstop.

I am looking for a centrally located reasonable hotel in new york city w/ parking. I will be taking my mother over the holidays.
    Thank you for any suggestions,
    Mary Lou

  20. Passrider says:

    Mary Lou,
This is a tough one. Parking in New York cost a lot. Are you driving in or flying in?
    I’d start at hotels.com though.
Pick a hotel in the area you want to stay and in your price range, then check to see if they have the amenities you require.
